Disclaimer - The following bloopers mentioned here may not be directly Terry’s fault. But what the hell – being an Arsenal fan, I am still going to post them.
- September 2001- The 9/11 party
With their flight to an away match at Levski Sofia grounded in the aftermath of the terror attacks on New York and Washington, Terry and his three teammates ended up in the bar of the Posthouse Hotel at Heathrow, where stranded travellers, many of them Americans, had gathered to watch the events unfold on TV. Instead, they were treated to the sight of the players throwing food around, while pictures of sobbing firemen searching through the rubble of the dead were being shown. As if that wasn’t enough, one player then exposed himself to the shocked crowd.
JT, as he is fondly referred to, was accused of cheating on then fiancee Toni Poole when he asked a 17 year-old fan, Jenny Barker, to perform a sex act in his $150,000 Bentley in a car park when she asked for an autograph. She said:
“He smiled and put on sexy Luther Vandross music from a selection on a huge screen in the car. One thing led to another but we did not have sex. I didn’t want to give in to him like I can imagine every other girl does.”
- March 2008 and November 2009- Dodgy parents
In 2008, Terry’s mother and mother-in-law were officially cautioned by the police after being accused of shoplifting £800 worth of goods (pet food, flip flops and casual clothing, to mention some of them) from Tesco and Marks & Spencer, a popular retail chain.
In 2009, Terry’s dad Ted was caught on camera appearing to sell cocaine in an Essex bar. Terry Senior was seen arranging to pass three grams of the drugs to an undercover reporter in return for £120 and telling him:
- January 2010 - The Wayne Bridge saga
Arguably, the most talked about of JT’s “extra curricular” activities. Terry’s infidelity was exposed when he was accused of bedding former Chelsea and England teammate and best friend Wayne Bridge’s girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel in a four month affair. It was also alleged that he got Perroncel pregnant ultimately resulting in an abortion. The incident also resulted in Terry being sacked as England captain and Bridge withdrawing from the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad.
The highlight of the scandal was when Terry (Chelsea) and Bridge (Man City) faced off for the first time in a competitive Premier League match on 27 Feb, 2011. Bridge apparently refused to shake Terry’s hand in the mandatory pre-match ceremony.
Here’ the video proof. Of the refusal, not the bedding part!
- October, 2011- The racist slur The latest and certainly, the most shameful blot on JT’s resume arrives in the form of Anton Ferdinand‘s accusing Terry of racial abuse in a QPR vs Chelsea Premier League match. A formal investigation was launched and Terry has been charged with using racist language by the Crown Prosecution Service. Terry’s foul mouth.
** A Special Mention - Arsenal’s Abou Diaby knocks Terry out A special tribute to all the Terry haters out there. The stage was set, the Carling Cup final, 2007-2008 season, Chelsea’s superstars vs Arsenal’s minnows. The 57th minute, the match stands at 1-1, a corner comes in from the right hand side, the ball pingpongs a little and BOOM! The next thing you see, John Terry is lying down almost choked – Diaby accidentally slammed his boot right in Terry’s face, as he dived in for a header. Though the incident demands all the sympathy in the world for Terry as he almost swallowed his own tongue, but we haters do need some festive cheer too!
